Hiking the volcanoes Karisimbi and Bisoke in Rwanda is an incredible experience that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests, and the chance to see rare and endangered wildlife, including mountain gorillas and golden monkeys.
Karisimbi is the highest volcano in Rwanda, at 4,507 meters (14,787 feet). It is a two-day hike to the summit, and the trail can be challenging, but the views at the top are well worth the effort. On a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction, including the other volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains, Lake Kivu, and even the Congo Basin.
Bisoke is a smaller volcano than Karisimbi, at 3,711 meters (12,175 feet). However, it is still a challenging hike to the summit, and the trail can be muddy and slippery, especially during the rainy season. The summit of Bisoke is home to a crater lake, which is a beautiful sight. You may also have the chance to see golden monkeys on the hike up to the summit.
