Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 270 species of birds recorded within its borders. The park’s diverse habitats, including rainforest, bamboo forest, and swamp, provide homes for a wide variety of birds, from colorful turacos and sunbirds to shy forest dwellers like the Albertine Owlet and the Grauer’s Broadbill.
Some of the best birding spots in Nyungwe National Park include:
- The canopy walk: The canopy walk is a suspended bridge that allows visitors to walk through the treetops and get a bird’s-eye view of the rainforest. This is a great place to see birds like the Ruwenzori Turaco and the Violet-Backed Starling.
- The Kamiranzovu Swamp: The Kamiranzovu Swamp is a home to a variety of wetland birds, including the Grey-Crowned Crane and the Papyrus Gonolek
- The Karamba Trail: The Karamba Trail is a moderate hike that takes visitors through a variety of habitats, including rainforest and bamboo forest. This is a great place to see birds like the Handsome Francolin and the Ruwenzori Batis.
- The Bigugu Trail: The Bigugu Trail is a challenging hike that takes visitors to the highest point in Nyungwe National Park. This is a great place to see birds like the Mountain Buzzard and the Alpine Chat
Nyungwe National Park is a great place to go birdwatching at any time of year, but the best time to see the most species is during the dry season (June-September). During this time, the birds are more concentrated around water sources.
