Liberation Museum

The Kigali Liberation Museum, also known as Umulindi w’Intwari (Hill of Heroes), is located in the Gicumbi District in northern Rwanda, about 80 kilometers northeast of Kigali. The museum tells the story of the Rwandan Liberation Struggle, which was led by the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) from 1990 to 1994.

The museum is located on the site of a former RPF military base, and it includes a number of exhibits on the RPF’s military campaign, as well as the political and social aspects of the struggle.

One of the most notable exhibits at the museum is the bunker of Paul Kagame, who was the leader of the RPF and is now the President of Rwanda. Visitors can enter the bunker and see the cramped and spartan conditions in which Kagame and his fellow fighters lived and worked during the war.

The museum also includes a number of exhibits on the role of women in the Liberation Struggle. Women played a vital role in the RPF, both on the battlefield and in supporting the war effort. The museum’s exhibits highlight the many contributions that women made to the struggle, and they also serve as a reminder of the importance of gender equality in Rwanda today.

The Kigali Liberation Museum is an important place for Rwandans to learn about their country’s history and the sacrifices that were made to achieve liberation. It is also a place for visitors to learn about the Rwandan people’s resilience and determination to build a better future.

The museum is currently open to the public, but it is still under development. The Rwandan government is working to build a new museum complex that will be more interactive and educational. The new museum is expected to open in 2024.
